The logo integrates photography elements with symbolic representation to center Black women within the brand. A camera and flash reference the creative industry, while the afro icon replaces the “o” in “Women,” placing identity directly within the word mark. This visual identity concept is for a photography community that celebrates Black women and creates space for connection and opportunity. I wanted to refresh the brand to better reflect the creativity and diversity within the community, using color, typography, and imagery to convey strength, connection, and creative expression. Instead of relying on purple and pink, I introduced a more expansive, spectrum-inspired palette to represent inclusivity and the range of voices within the community.
The color palette is displayed as Polaroid inspired swatches to subtly reference photography and storytelling. Each tone was chosen to feel warm, grounded, bold, and intentional while supporting strong visual contrast.
The goal was to create a brand identity that feels authentic, intimate, powerful, and culturally grounded. The visual system needed to honor softness and strength simultaneously while maintaining editorial clarity.

LOGO DEVELOPMENT
First Draft
Early logo concept exploring African-inspired colors and a camera form with the silhouette of a Black woman placed inside the lens. The extended black shape on the left represents the camera grip while the BWP initials anchor the mark.Second Draft
Refined concept simplifying the camera form by removing the grip and adjusting the color palette to improve visual balance. Purple and pink tones were introduced to emphasize femininity while the silhouette was repositioned to face the typography.Third Draft
Further exploration testing a pink, white, and brown gradient palette while maintaining the camera and silhouette. This direction helped evaluate color harmony and symbolism before pushing the identity toward a stronger final concept.MOCKUPS
ICONS
Custom icons represented as stickers to demonstrate how the visuals extend into more casual, community centered areas and interests.A stationery set designed to translate the brand identity into a more professional context. Stripes of ripped paper were incorporated to introduce creativity, texture and movement into the traditional corporate format.Tote bag mockup created to show how the identity could function in everyday community spaces. The logo emphasis prioritizes visibility while still feeling intentional and grounded.A film strip element incorporating the afro silhouette icon to connect the identity back to blackness, photography, and storytelling. The framing reinforces visibility and positions Black women photographers as centrally within the visual narrative. This project strengthened my ability to build cohesive visual systems that balance narrative depth with structured design. It reflects my interest in creative direction centered on identity.
The identity system earned two Silver ADDY Awards for Integrated Brand Identity and Special Event Materials.
